Yet Another Appliance Replacement
3rd-Jun-2016 11:41 pm
It has been becoming increasingly evident that our old refrigerator which we got when we bought the house nearly 20 years ago is moving toward the end of its working lifetime. We might be able to get the current problem fixed, but putting money into a 20 year old refrigerator is not the best investment.

So -- after a lot of online research -- we went out to the appliance store today and bought a new Samsung refrigerator. The girls are (at least temporarily) happy, because it will have an ice and water dispenser. Yes, apparently it was time for us to move into the late 20th century on this. :)

We also decided to get a fridge with french doors and a bottom freezer. We think this will work out for us, but I suppose we'll find out...

Now we just have to make sure that the old fridge keeps running for another week.

I also got a refrigerator this past week, though I won't get a lot of use out of it. It just seems easier to sell the condo if it doesn't have 30-year-old appliances. The range was replaced at the same time. It was so old that a quarter of its LEDs had failed.

The house in Houghton came with a bottom freezer, and we loved it. When it died (cheap appliances in student rentals don't last), we bought another one just like it. And moved 3 months later.

A few years ago, the fridges in the church kitchen were dying, and we strongly suggested that they get bottom freezer (the only thing in the freezers is bagged ice and butter pats, and occasionally cookies). They got a deal on them from the appliance store in town, and now nobody who uses the kitchen wants to go back to freezer on the top.

The only reason our current fridge is not a bottom freezer is that Kenmore didn't make a freezer on the bottom without water/ice in the door at the time, and we don't want that (well water is cold enough, tyvm, and it's one more thing to leak). But it's 20+ years old, and I look at fridges every 6 months or so, just so I know what's out there. The french door/bottom freezer combination is high on the list.

I'm struck that this is a good argument against Internet-capable appliances. Just imagine if your old fridge could read your blog and hear that it's getting replaced in a week... :-)
