We're planning a trip to the Des Plaines Public Works Department for their Wednesday drop off of electronics, as I have accumulated a great many things that are no longer allowed to go in the trash:

  • Eleven failed hard drives
  • Seven keyboards of questionable function
  • A dead VCR
  • And a dead CRT monitor of enormous size that weighs a ton

Now if only there were a closer place to get rid of a broken CFL than Naperville. There are also sites in Chicago and Rockford, according to the Illinois EPA. Apparently, if you live downstate, you are S.O.L.

There's a schedule of dates for hazardous waste disposal on the Illinois EPA website. There are none listed for 2014.

Apparently, broken CFLs are supposed to become cherished family heirlooms, because it doesn't seem that you can get rid of them...
