I've Been Through the Desert...

The last thing I did last night after installing software on the studio computer in the basement was swing by the furnace to take a look at the built-in humidifier. It turns out that the filter pad that was supposed to be soaking wet was as dry as a bone (except at the bottom, where it's looking a bit mildewed), because it had fallen out of its little sleeve. So basically, we've had no humidification all winter.

This explains, I think, the succession of colds, congestion, and sore throats that we've been experiencing.

I'll stop and get a new filter pad and install it better tonight. In the meantime, I've juryrigged the old pad and it seems to be working a bit better. Certainly my nose was a lot less dry when I got up this morning.
