Tick, Tick, Tick

So after a multi-hour download of a VM image of the OS, followed by a day spent getting it ready to run in my environment, multiple hours of copying installation files from the physical machine to the VM image, extraction of the compressed files, and the installation of the software, I can now report:

It didn't work.

Well, there's two days shot all to heck.

I'm sure there were plenty of pejorative expansions of the acronym VM/CMS. Certainly there was VMS, which ran on VAXen...I don't remember the English but I remember the French, Vachement Mauvaise Systeme, literally cowlike naughty system (except "cowlike" is an adverb...).

I looked in the Jargon File, it doesn't seem to have been updated in quite a while...and there's no entry for VM.

Undoubtedly you've thought of this, but if they're closing yoour office and requiring you to work from home why can't you get your work computer to work on?

Well, let's see. In order:

  • The software installs, but the security console will not run on the work computer, so I can't configure common security services.
  • Which is why I was trying to install the software in a "clean" VM image.
  • Where it doesn't install properly for some unknown reason.
  • Although that's what they recommended that I try at work.
  • I could run against a remote server, but I can't get anyone to set one up for me in the computer lab.
  • No, I don't know why.
  • Maybe it's against their religion.
  • Company policy does not allow me to take a desktop computer home.

Which is probably enough, to be honest.

Insane. If they -want- you to work from home then they ought to make it possible.

I can use the work laptop and Remote Desktop to connect to a machine elsewhere. Of course, the ping times from here to there are long enough to get a third of the way to the Moon at light speed...
