Over the Rubicon

The DirecTV installer arrived this morning and installed our new satellite dish. I have a bit of rewiring to do in the basement so that I can put the cover back over the wiring access -- I bought a new Leviton modular jack plate with six holes to replace the existing one with four, plus the two F connector jacks that I need to add so that I can pass the cable wiring through to the broadband deca and the Internet adapter that's now plugged into my router. But the rewiring can wait until the girls are upstairs watching Phineas and Ferb from the old DVR that's still wired in.

Equipment casualties of the rewiring -- as in, something's got to come out to make room! -- are the dual cassette deck in the family room, the VCR in the living room (which appears to have been disconnected anyway), and the rather nice Magnavox digital DVR in the bedroom. Of these, the only one we were using was the bedroom DVR and it's been rather effectively replaced. Of course, it was the one that has all of the last season of Heroes on it, but at least we have watched the episodes. :)

On the way back from lunch, I dropped off my digital adapter boxes at the Comcast office and canceled my service. When the nice lady behind the desk asked why, I explained that it was because they had scrambled the digital channels and thereby disabled the five clear QAM tuners that I have around the house. Once they did that, there was no reason not to convert to satellite.

And she thanked me for my honesty.

As it turns out, this was the last day of the billing period, so I should pay one last Comcast bill and that will be the end of it.

On the DirecTV side, everything seems to be working correctly, except that the DVR in the family room needs to download new software to support the multi-room feature. It should do that tonight, but we'll see how it goes. :)
